Female DJs Are Taking Over Houston

LIVE CULTURE BLOG

We usually think of a male when we hear Dj before any name, but stereotypes are a thing of the past. This past Monday night you could find Dj Pretty Brown mixing at Habibil Lounge in her fierce red attire, flawless make-up, and a warming smile. Tune into online radio channel 95.3 Jamz at 10 p.m. on a Thursday night, and you'll hear the spunky voice of Dj CaliRoyce. Dj Supa Star is also very popular, hosting on local broadcasting stations like 93.7 The Beat, 104.5 Kiss, and even the Isiah Carey Show on Fox 26 News. The list goes on, proving that Houston's filled with talented females who can keep a crowd going by mixing music at your favorite bars, events, nightclubs, and restaurants.

Annie Nightingale was the woman to broadcast. She worked for BBC on 14 September 1963 as a panellist on Juke Box Jury, and she contributed to Woman's Hour in 1964 and hosted programmes on the BBC Light Programme in 1966.

These female Dj's are taking the business seriously and working hard in an industry that is majority male dominated. So serious that Dj Supa Star has opened up her own school to teach other aspiring DJ's how to get the job done.
